2006 Pontiac Torrent Review

On a recent episode of Jeopardy, none of the candidates to identify the company responsible known for motorsports miscarriages as Aztek and Grand Prix. Seems GM has "excitement" division remove some heavy brush. Despite the paddle-to-the-chest prospects for the new Solstice, are the most important brand hopes for bailout with the torrent. It is unfortunate that the name of the re-badged Chevy Equinox (or is it vice versa?), Usually with the term "abuse", not because of the small SUV earned. Well, maybe a trickle …

The Torrent is characterized in a sport where most American cars do not even styling seat. Given the torrent only-a-cataract-eyed-mom-on-tranqs-could-love predecessor (what is an Aztek, Alex) Pontiac is the gold medal in metal sculpting event a Miracle on Ice-caliber results. Although the Torrent sharp lines and wrinkles customized standard output are cute-ute, the SUV is one of the more cohesive looking vehicles from GM truck heavy lineup. The torrent is both perfectly proportioned and elegantly detailed. Even Pontiac signature "butterfly" twin-port grille looks like it's finally found a happy place.

The raise-the-roof reverie sets inside the torrent of urban-but-not-intimidating interior. Yes, you've seen this GM dash frame and turned not so mock horror. But lifting light of the two-color color concept torrent, chrome accents, orange and cool the cabin on the cookie-cutter SunFires yesteryear. Important controls (such as the round, user-friendly environment selection knobs) are well distributed and Spock logically. The rectangular interior door handles nestle in the black circles are rimmed with chrome, contrasting boldly with the tan leather linger underneath. This is quick, Germanic-level pattern manipulation. I applaud.

Reach inside the underworld, however, and it's a different story. The driver's seat lived so close to the door that I could not access the six-fold controls without painful peeling. The torrent of the cargo hold is eight lanes wide, but the two plastic shell anchor sticking out of the frame seems specifically designed to eliminate the possibility of carrying anything larger than a dorm fridge that is not deformable. Tell your buddy is moving a new Barca good for the soul.

The all-wheel-drive Torrent comes with a 3.4-liter V6, married with a five-speed automatic. The 185hp SUV bolts out of the gate like a thoroughbred cattle prodded, then sits down at a pace much cattle. Given the torrent weight, the generous torque rod engine is trudging appropriate at hand, nothing more. The smooth-shifting autobox and symphonic silence (GM expert noise reduction squad) keeps your mind from wondering if this is you getting in your own way (it is). As for the torrent of fossil fuels factor, the EPA classifies the average SUV 18mpg in the city, 24 on the highway. The numbers are, of course, a stove pipe dream. I averaged 19-something during a seven-day mix of country roads and trucker Bahns.

Pontiac ads tout the torrent, the "car-like agility." Call me a gullible victim of spin, but I expected the torrent to negotiate corners like a car. If we are not talking about a 3700-pound ten-year-old Honda Accord, it does not. Down winding roads to the torrent feels like a natural candidate for The Biggest Loser, or at least Sweatin 'to the Oldies. Spin the wheel after nine clock, and it is as if a nitrous-sucking dentist pumped the helmet with Novocain. It is the feeling no evil, see no evil, the torrent the C-pillars are for trucks, which is non-reflective coating on stealth bomber. Slide the torrent by a curve and the apple cart upset you just might be your own. One hopes this is not the kind of excitement Pontiac set out to create.

Which reminds me: Pontiac bundles side impact and curtain airbags with OnStar as part of a $ 1,090 option package. Such brazen connection between consumer and corporate greed is not even the Pontiac brand no favors. Of course, if you are known by the dwindling group as Pontiac loyalists, you're not likely to complain about the security in connection with extortion – or anything else for that matter. Take a look at the torrent and say, yup, OK, fair enough. More demanding customers will see that GM is again build an excellent vehicle that is a full model cycle behind the competition. Compared to more mechanically demanding midsize utes like the RAV4 (268hp) or Ford Escape (available hybrid), the torrent of superficial elegance.

Despite its dynamic disadvantages of Pontiac Torrent has just enough life force to potential buyers forget about the brand's recent history as a washed-up has-producer of beans, also-rans and Cars. But not quite. Given the quality of the alternatives, the torrent had faster, sharper and more economical. If Pontiac is no reason the game soon, the brand is again in danger of car brands in the direction of $ 100 slot in the category 'DEAD.
