New 6-series Convertible on track for 2011 debut

The 2011 BMW 6 Series test mules have moved onto the Nurburgring track for the usual testing. Sporting again the now BMW “trademarked” psychedelic tape, the 6er Convertible was spotted by the fellows at AutoExpress. Despite the fact that this test mule is showing off a soft top, our sources are still convinced that the final production model will receive hardtop as seen in the BMW E93 3 Series.
We’ve described the new 6er many times before, but we still owe you a quick refresher. The 2011 BMW 6 Series is slightly longer and wider than the current generation. The overall 6 Series appearance will carry over, BMW has mentioned that the new 6 will be evolutionary and keeping the premium sport car image from the current model. As signaled by BMW’s new CS concept, the automaker will be abandoning its awkward trunk design features in favor of a more streamlined design. It will have shorter overhangs and a lower roofline which implicitly gives the car a more muscular look.
The front-end is still quite covered by the camouflage, but we expect to see a headlight combination between the CS Concept and the 5 Series GT.
The 2011 6-Series will offer more legroom for rear passengers. At the same time, it will get a sportier cockpit with a more driver oriented console layout, a trend seen in the most recent BMW models or concepts.
It is still unclear which model will go on sale first, but the fellows at AutoExpress believe that in order to take advantage of Spring/Summer sales, the Convertible will make its appearance first.
Again as with the 2011 BMW 5 Series, the next 6 Series is still in the first stage of the Final Evaluation Phase, but by the end of the summer, we should see them sporting less camouflage and more important, we will get some test mules on the U.S. soil as well.
