2013 Ram 1500 Design: Deep Dive

Posted on 12. Apr, 2012 by in Auto News

At first glance it is difficult to say how much really changed on the 2013 Ram 1500, but do not let first impressions fool. Ram has a complete review of the whole truck look, done inside and out. The Ram team examined every inch of the truck and two questions: Can we do it better? Can we make it better?

Yes, the aerodynamics is improved, but the biggest changes, from a design point of view, to see inside.

Exterior: freshened face, Better Airflow

Ram engineers and designers knew that they wanted the truck unique look consistent, but also needed to squeeze out every ounce of improved air circulation they could -. No easy task for the inherent disadvantages of the pickup form

The designer transformed the crosshair grille, sculpting the lower angle and makes it larger by about an inch. Depending on which model you're looking at, it will be four different grille design. ST, SLT and R / T models have a new molded-in black "Hex-Link" design, Big Horn and Sport models get a "ticket-perf" texture in two different versions, the Laramie has a "hex Perf "texture in chrome, and the Laramie Longhorn Grille sports an upscale" Wave mesh "texture.

To get a better aerodynamic efficiency, engineers made minor changes to the front-end face, grille and hood to make sure. The wind cuts and slips past body parts as quickly as possible with minimal turbulence As a result of the bumper and front seams are closed, and all surfaces and openings for the fog lights, tow bar and headlights have been redesigned. The previous drag coefficient for the Ram was 0.387 Cd, the coefficient for the 2013 Ram is a number 0.363 Cd competes with some impressive sports car.

The new headlights on premium models (think Audi or Chrysler 300) a bifunctional halogen projector lamp with 15 amber LEDs have. The standard quad headlight design on the lower level packages has improved spread pattern and better luminosity. In fact, the Ram design team went out of their way to make some visual entertainment with the headlights by unique lines and angles, as well as placement of the Ram logo on the right to create the outer lens. The rear lights have also been redesigned so that the new truck a sharper, flashier look.

Another small but significant change relates to the new formatting of the page name tags. Previous patches were lined horizontally, who along the door, while the new model stacked the name. This is probably good news for independent business owners and entrepreneurs who now have more properties for magnetic door signs and graphics company. Another new feature we like is the outside, the new stainless steel running board option, the total length is between the wheel arches. This is especially useful for Quad and Crew Cab models, as it allows easy access to the front of the bed and into the cabin.

Inside: New center stack and More

The interior of the new Ram offers a completely new instrument panel, center console and gauge layout that looks not only more common, but also makes it easier to find all the buttons and switches. Large improvements in fit and finish and material selection are also evident. Decorative stitching and large surface materials are there obvious where money was spent, but we also like the soft-touch padding on the door armrests and center console. Buttons and switches are much larger and easier to see than before. The appearance and trim packages we (included in the media and photos) on the New York International Auto Show saw the feeling is a huge improvement over the previous design.

Rear passengers get many of the same advantages in terms of quality, fit and finish as the driver. New premium materials, colors and designs now appear on all four doors, not just the front two. Improve soft-touch materials and upper arm strengthens. ST packages are available in black / trim diesel interior color. SLT is in Canyon Brown / Light frost or black / diesel, and the Sport model features all-black materials. Stepping up Laramie offers customers a choice of all-black or Canyon Brown / Light Frost. Laramie Longhorn is a new Cattle Tan / Black Canyon or Brown / Light Frost option.

The center console can including the new 8.4-inch Uconnect screen on select models, the background screens can be customized to fit many of the style and themes of the various features. Each trim package has a different style, offering different materials and colors in the dashboard, doors and seats. We especially like the intelligent use of the new center stack layout with manual switch for the new air conditioning system immediately below the information touch screen (where you can also control the air conditioning), with a series of switches below functions as controlling the air suspension, start / stop Stability Control, Tow / Haul and parking sensors.

The newly installed brake controller (if present) is seated next to the two rows of function controls. The new console, center stack contains a 115-volt outlet and new drawer at the base of the stack, with a smooth, film-like Toolbox action. A 12-volt power outlet is located on both sides of the drawer and an optional USB port is located on the driver's side.

As already mentioned, there is the new dial that controls the eight-speed transmission on the driver side of the center console. The dial has two versions, with the four-wheel-drive push-button controls under the dial. The design on the ST, SLT and Sport features black rubber over molding with chrome frame, painted all Laramie models have a solid, spun aluminum dial in silver. Electronic Range Select for the new eight-speed transmission is on the face of the steering wheel, right so. Individual gear selection and top-gear lockout

New technology is also moving to the cluster theory. Previously only on premium models the 3.5-inch screen, Vehicle Information Center is now. On the ST and SLT-Standard The new 7-inch screen is now on SLT models and standard on Sport, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn. The 7-inch screen features a fully customizable functionality and configurability. Similar to the 8.4-inch Uconnect system select 7-inch cluster background screens on certain models have custom-Ram, with designs that fit the truck theme.

Two new steering wheels are offered, depending on interior and transmission choice (V-8s only). Also, the center console for both the bank and 40/20/40-split bucket seats, the new eight-speed transmission have completely and storage optimization. The center consoles that have the standard auto-stick six-speed transmission with either one of the two V-8s will look familiar, but a new look and more efficient storage space and to have. The seat console continue to provide a hidden storage compartment in the seat as before, but the new offer is more than double the capacity.

Finally, a cool feature that the half-ton pickup is a premium feel, regardless of trim package tonnes Sapphire Blue LED lights on the buttons and around the inside to give a soothing ambient lighting feeling.

Overall, the small improvements add up the Ram's design team has developed into something much greater than the sum of its parts. All changes to the exterior were made in the name of efficiency for improved fuel economy or business use. However, the internal changes are a clear statement that Ram, wants a bite of Ford and GM market share. At this point, Ram has all the right pieces to play, and we advise on a lot of the success of the brand, such as the Ram truck prices from 2013-model. Look for the complete model and option pricing near the end of the year.
