Ford Beats GM on Strength of SUVs, Trucks

Yes, Ford overtook GM in February as the country’s best-selling auto company for the first time since 1998, but it didn’t do it by selling a fleet of Fusion Hybrids ( Cars.com’s Best of 2010 award winner ). No, it beat GM by a mere 334 units with strong sales of its F-Series pickup and the Edge crossover and Escape compact SUV. Toyota’s sales decline in February gave the two domestic brands a chance to grab the sales spotlight, but those vehicle sales are still dominated by trucks and now crossovers

Small Pickup Trucks Lag in IIHS Crash and Roof Crush Tests

By Larry Edsall for PickupTrucks.com Only one of five small pickup trucks – the Nissan Frontier -- tested for rollover protection received a good rating from the by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the group reported late Wednesday. However, even the Frontier (also sold as the Suzuki Equator) fell short of achieving the IIHS’ “Top Safety Pick” recognition. Worst of all, though, was the failure of the Dodger Dakota’s side-curtain airbags to deploy in the pickup’s side-impact test.

By David Thomas Toyota says a steel reinforcement bar will fix sticky accelerator pedals in 2.3 million vehicles recalled two weeks ago , including 2007-10 Tundra full-size pickups. The company will start to send the necessary parts by the end of the week and says some dealers will stay open 24 hours to accommodate such a large number of owners affected by the recall.

Hybrids Loaded With Too Many Luxury Features, Group Says

Automakers are including too many unnecessary luxury amenities on their hybrid vehicles, driving up the prices of what should otherwise be more affordable cars, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists . So-called “forced features” such as leather interiors and pricey navigation systems represent a considerable price bump that pushes hybrids into unaffordable territory for many potential customers, the nonprofit group says.
