Car Software Will Only Increase

Because of the Toyota recalls and the possibility of a problem with the software controlling the engine throttle, a spotlight has fallen on the ever-increasing amount of software in automobiles. An IEEE Spectrum article offers this comparison: The F-22 Raptor uses about 1.7 million lines of software code; the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will use 5.7 million lines of code; the Boeing 787 Dreamliner will require 6.5 million lines of code. A new premium-class car likely contains close to 100 million lines of software code, and experts say this will reach between 200 million and 300 million lines in the near future

GM to Produce Electric Motors In-House for Next-Gen Two-Mode Hybrid Pickup Trucks

General Motors' next-generation full-size Two-Mode Hybrid pickup trucks will arrive in 2013 with all-new electric motors designed and manufactured in-house by the company. Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of global product operations, said Monday that understanding and controlling the production of electric motors will be critical if GM is to satisfy customer demands as vehicle buyers become more familiar with electric-driven cars and trucks. ‘Old Chrysler’ Won’t Repay $4 Billion Federal Loan

The company Old Carco — better known as “Old Chrysler” — will not repay the initial $4 billion government loan it received from the Troubled Asset Relief Program in January, according to the reorganization plan filed in a New York bankruptcy court. Report: BMW, Daimler to end hybrid partnership

BMW and Daimler have been working more and more closely together over the past several years, especially since the need to share costs and improve bottom lines has become so sharp in 2009. But despite ongoing partnerships for vehicle safety technology, the hybrid partnership that spawned the two-mode hybrid appears to be in trouble. A report emerging from Germany today via Auto Motor & Sport has a BMW spokesperson casting doubt on the continuance of the partnership with Daimler.
